Disaster aid coming to south Jersey
By Eric Avedissian Ocean City Sentinel
President Barack Obama gave the state an early Christmas present on Dec. 22 when he issued a major disaster declaration for the state, enabling federal assistance for repairing storm damage from nor’easters that struck New Jersey in November.
The declaration provides assistance to state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the storms in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean, Cumberland, Burlington and Camden counties.
Cape May County Emergency Management Director Frank McCall said part of the federal aid will be spent for a hazard mitigation program to prevent recurring losses and storm-related damage in the future.
A nor’easter hit the region from Nov. 12 to 14 and caused storm surges, high winds and flooding over the New Jersey coast. Seaside communities experienced massive beach erosion and dune loss from the storm, prompting the state to call for federal assistance.
McCall said local officials performed a “windshield survey” of storm damage, within 48 hours after a storm. Ocean City’s initial assessments pegged the estimated damage at $89 million. However, after careful review with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Ocean City suffered an estimated dune loss of around $7 million.
McCall said multi-agencies examined the storm damaged beaches and discarded the initial $89 million figure for a more accurate assessment.
