The formula is simple: good ties to community and a strong family unit add up to kids making good choices, says Michele Previti, coordinator of the Upper Township & Ocean City Municipal Alliance Committee.

A fun way to do that is open up the Upper Township Recreation Center for Family Skate Night and if Saturday’s attendance was any indication that families and friends like to skate together, MAC is onto something.

As soon as the doors opened, kids of all ages and their parents hit the rec floor, skating in circles to the thumping beat laid down by the DJ.

“It’s really fun,” said Adam King, 10 of Marmora. “We get to free skate, rip around and hang out with friends.”

Previti, who is a volunteer, said the Governor’s Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse provides grants to put on family friendly events.

The UT & OC MAC is active in several activities for youth, including Peer Leadership, After Prom, First Night and Red Ribbon Week, all focused on drug and alcohol awareness.

“We partner with schools, community groups and churches to get the message out to the community,” said Previti.

Previti cites statistics that show teens are at a reduced risk for alcohol problems when surrounded by adults who regularly support positive lifestyle choices and activities.

There were plenty of adults at Skate Night who were spending some quality time with their kids.

Dave Schultz, of Seaville, gathered up daughter Mia and some of her friends and headed for the Recreation Center when he heard it was Skate Night. “We try to make it whenever there is a Skate Night. This is great for the kids,” said Schultz, who happened to be wearing a pair of in-line skates. “My wife is at a girl’s night out, so we came here to get out of the house.”

Previti said the Upper Township & Ocean City Municipal Alliance Committee is always looking for new members to serve on the steering committee. She can be contacted through the Upper Township Municipal Clerk’s Office, 628-2011, who will forward the message.
