Mabel R. Griffin, 89

OCEAN CITY – Mabel Rita Griffin, of Ocean City, died Dec. 19, 2009 at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point.

She was born Jan. 22,1920, one of six children of Joseph and Henrietta Bowman Thompson. She attended Ocean City schools, where she enjoyed her studies and athletics. She played basketball, danced and loved Double Dutch Jump Rope. She was employed at area laundries and enjoyed styling hair for friends and family. Her last employment was bookkeeper and clerk for her brother and his sons with S.W. Thompson & Sons. She was actively involved in her church and civic groups. She joined St. James AME Church at an early age and remained a member until her death. There she served on the Stewardess Board and the Gospel Travelers Choir. She was also Daughter Ruler for Elks Geranium Temple No. 469 during the 1950s. She devoted her life to church, family and community. She was a member of the Ocean City Old Timers.

She was predeceased by her husband, William; brothers, Alvin and Sylvester; and sisters, Hazel, Vivian and Sarah.

Survivors include her son, William; godchild, Anita Ricks; brother-in-law, Raymond Griffin; nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Funeral services were offered Dec. 28 from St. James AME Church in Ocean City. Burial followed in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James AME Church, Ocean City, NJ 08226. The Godfrey Funeral Home of Ocean City and Palermo had charge of arrangements.

The Rev. Dr. John F. Garrahan, 89

PALERMO – The Rev. Dr. John F. Garrahan, 89, of Palermo, died Dec. 20, 2009 at his home.

He was a pastor for 60 years, having served as pastor for the United Methodist Church in Tuckahoe, Petersburg, Swainton, Port Elizabeth, Delmont, and Leesburg. He taught for more than 30 years both in high schools and on the college levels. He retired from Glassboro State College in 1980. He then began a career as a private marriage and family counselor.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline; a son, Scott; daughters, Kathleen Bogushefsky and Ruth Megargee; a brother, James; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 from the Tuckahoe United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Head of the River Cemetery in Estell Manor. Memorial contributions may be made to the church of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were in the care of the Langley-Loveland Funeral Home Tuckahoe.

John W. Manni, 83

OCEAN CITY – John W. Manni, 83, of Ocean City, died Dec. 24, 2009.

Born in and formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., he was an Ocean City resident for 58 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army before his honorable discharge. He was a cabinet maker for many years and later the owner of Harvey’s Home Made Candy on the Ocean City Boardwalk for 20 years before retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Ocean City.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie Manni (nee Allegretto) of Ocean City; a son, Jay Manni of the Bahamas; daughter, Debbie Eisele of Ocean City; four grandchildren, Steven, Gabrielle, Nickolas and Giavanna; two great-grandchildren; and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 29 from St. Frances Cabrini R. C. Church in Ocean City. Burial followed in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 626 N. Shore Road, Absecon, NJ 08201. The Godfrey Funeral Home of Ocean City and Palermo had charge of arrangements.

Carlton Heaton, 66

MARMORA – Carlton “Jim” Heaton, 66, of Marmora, died Dec 21, 2009.

He was a lifelong area resident, and resided in the Marmora section of Upper Township for 38 years. He was retired from the Tidewater Construction Co. of Egg Harbor, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR. He was an active member of the South Millville Gun Club in Upper Township, and Star Lodge No. 65 F&AM of Tuckahoe. He was a past master of Star Lodge and was a Masonic instructor there for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Carlton H. and Esther J. Heaton.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Shirley Camp; sons, Carlton Heaton Jr., Wayne Heaton, Robert Camp, and Bret Camp; daughters, Mary Maryniak and Jacki Camp; a brother, Charles Heaton; a sister, Dolly Repici; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial Masonic service will be held Sunday, Jan. 3, at 1 p.m. at the South Millville Gun Club, Belleplain Road in Upper Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Star Lodge, P.O. Gary M. King

Gary M. King died Dec. 27, 2009.

He was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles and Grateful Dead fan.

He was predeceased by his father, John F. King Jr.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Malloy King of Palermo; his wife, Sharon Titchell of Ewing; his children, Hunter, Maris and Alexis King; step-children, Dana and Eric Caballero; friend, Christine King; siblings, Jack King, Marge Selgrade and Lisa King; a niece, nephew and extended family.

Charles Marciana, 90

SOMERS POINT – Charles Marciana, 90, of Somers Point, died Dec. 19, 2009.

He was a craftsman and sexton for a number of Catholic pastors in southern New Jersey parishes for more than 70 years. Known as “Mr. Charley,” he began his career in 1936 at 18, having graduated from Camden High School. His first job as sexton was at Sacred Heart Church in Camden. He enlisted in the Marines in World War II, fighting in the South Pacific. Honorably discharged, he returned to his former employment and moved with Fr. Hannon to St. James Church in Ventnor. He also served under successive pastors, including Monsignors Martin McMahon and Edward O’Connor. He worked then in maintaining the church and school of St. Augustine in Ocean City under Msgr. Augustus Seidenberg, Msgr. Edward Mullen, and its present pastor Fr. Michael Rush. A number of times he renovated the church interiors single-handedly. He was hard working, straightforward in conversation, with sometimes rough edges, but had a sensitive and generous heart, his family said.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alice.

Survivors include his son, Charles Thomas of Cherry Hill; two grandchildren, Kimberly Ann and Stephen Marciana; and a great-grandson, Bret Marciana.

A memorial Mass was held at St. Augustine Church, Ocean City on Dec. 26. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were in the care of the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home.

Rose M. Mawson, 80

OCEAN CITY – Rose M. Mawson (nee Bunomo), 80, of Ocean City, died Dec. 23, 2009 in Warwick, N.Y.

She was born in Jersey City and lived there for several years before moving to Ocean City. She worked in sales at Groveland Pharmacy in Somers Point. She is a former member of the Women of the Moose in Atlantic City.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick J. Mawson; and son, Gary M. Mawson.

Survivors include her children, Frederick G. of Ringwood, Robert M. of Haskell, and Maria Santillana of Clifton; and five grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was offered Dec. 28 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Bayonne, followed by interment in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City. Arrangements are by George J. Koch Funeral Home in Bayonne.

Nancy McCusker, 72

SEA ISLE CITY – Nancy McCusker (nee Gilpert), 72, of Sea Isle City, died Dec. 22 at Taylor Hospital.

She was also of Aldan, Pa. Born in Rochester, N.Y., she attended St. Carthage Elementary School, where she received the American Legion Award. She graduated from West Catholic Girls High School in West Philadelphia. A homemaker, she worked as an X-ray technician at St. Agnes Burn Center and Misericordia Hospital, both in Philadelphia, prior to her marriage. She was also a member of the Small Business Association. She was known for her amazing meals and for being the “fixer”, carrying tools in her pocketbook. She enjoyed playing and teaching her grandchildren card games and Scrabble, practical jokes, singing show tunes, and enjoying tea in the winter. She enjoyed summers in Sea Isle and watching the boats drive by in the Intercoastal Waterway.

She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick McCusker; and a brother, David Gilpert.

Survivors include children, Patrick of Swainton, Matthew of Media, Pa., James of Aldan, Pa., Mary Anne McCusker of Philadelphia, Pa., Lisa McCusker-Sherer of Glen Mills, Joanna McCusker of Sea Isle City and Jennifer Andrews of Norwood; a sister, Joan Hopely of Aldan, Pa.; a brother, Richard Gilpert of Coatesville, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Dec. 29 at St. Eugene Catholic Church in Secane. Burial was at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in Marple, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to Mothers Home, 51 N. MacDade Blvd., Darby, PA 19023

Marie E. McIntyre, 93

LINWOOD – Marie E. McIntyre, 93, of Linwood, died Dec. 24, 2009 in Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a long time resident of Linwood and formerly from Ocean City. She was a member of St John Lutheran Church in Ocean City.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas H. of San Antonio, Texas and Harry W. of Fort Myers, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and extended family.

Funeral service and internment will be private at the convenience of her family. Arrangements by the Godfrey Funeral Home of Ocean City and Palermo.

Frances Princiotti

MARMORA – Frances Princiotti (nee Noon), of Marmora, died Dec. 16, 2009.

She was born in Jersey City and moved to south Jersey 50 years ago. She was a woman full of compassion for those in need. She was always involved in foster care. Throughout the years, all of her time and energy was devoted to her family. She liked bowling and was an avid reader. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City casinos and traveling to Las Vegas. She retired from Woodbine Developmental Center.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Sr.; and son Thomas.

Survivors include children, Larry and Stanley, both of Tuckahoe, Patrick of Tuckerton; Adrienne of Somers Point, and Roberta of Tuckahoe; and grandchildren, Joseph and Patrick.

A private memorial service will be held in her honor. Parsels Funeral Home of Absecon handled the arrangements.

Eunice J. Roberts

CORBIN CITY – Eunice Jean Roberts, of Corbin City, died Dec. 25, 2009 in Wesley Manor in Ocean City.

Born in Hoboken, she had been a resident of Corbin City for seven years and was formerly from Absecon. She was a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 5561 in Bogota.

She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Roberts.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol J. Bennis of Corbin City; two grandchildren, Aimee Schultz and Michael T. Bennis; two great-grandchildren; and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 29 at St. Augustine’s R.C. Church in Ocean City. Final resting place is in Laurel Memorial Park, Pomona. Arrangements by the Godfrey Funeral Home of Ocean City and Palermo.

William P. Spollen, 79

NORTHFIELD – William Patrick Spollen, 79, of Northfield, died Dec. 20, 2009 at his home.

Son of Michael and Nora Spollen, he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Northfield for 45 years. He worked for 32 years at the FAA Technical Center as a flight inspection pilot. In his younger years, he worked around the country as a cameraman, helping open up some of the first TV stations in the eastern U.S. A four-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, 1948 to 1952, and served his country during the Korean Conflict with the 1st Marine Air Wing. His great passion was flying airplanes. He enjoyed vacationing with his family in Lake George, N.Y., and was an avid Eagles fan.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margaret; five children, Michael, John and James of Northfield, Cathy Colquhoun of Mays Landing and Jean Guanchez of Ventnor; a brother, Frank; seven grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 26 at St. Bernadette’s Church in Northfield. Burial followed in Mays Landing. Memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 172 Route 50, Seaville NJ, 08230 or St. Bernadette’s Church, 1421 New Road, Northfield NJ, 08225. The Adams-Perfect Funeral Home in Northfield had charge of arrangements.

Alfred Wagner, 84

SEA ISLE CITY – Alfred Wagner, 84, of Sea Isle City, died Dec. 22, 2009 after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 11, 1925. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. He met Florence McClory in Sea Isle City and was married one year later on May 22, 1948. He worked as an upholsterer, and clerk of the grand jury in Cape May Court House. He was a scoutmaster of Troop 76 for 11 years, belonged to Knights of Columbus, Madonna Maria, co-owned Pier 88 in Sea Isle City, and was a former president of Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Florence T. Wagner of Sea Isle City; two children, Charles K. “Ken” Wagner of Palermo, and Katherine B. Zeits of Palermo; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 28 from St. Joseph’s R. C. Church in Sea Isle City. Burial followed in Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House. Edward J. Burkhardt, 88

OCEAN CITY – Edward James Burkhardt, 88, of Ocean City, died Dec. 20, 2009.

Born in south Philadelphia, Pa., he moved to Ocean City in 2005. He was a veteran of U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the Philippines and the Pacific Theater. He had taught Officers Candidate School at Fort Hood, Texas, and was a member of the D.A.V. He served in the Civilian Conservation Camps, being stationed in Arizona, New Mexico and North East, Maryland. He was a machinist for Westinghouse for 25 years before retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Lillian (nee DeMaio) of Ocean City; a daughter, Darlina McCormick of Ocean City; two grandchildren, Dana Mower and James Patrick; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services were Dec. 26 from The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo. Entombment followed in Holy Cross Mausoleum in Mays Landing. Memorial contributions may be made to Smile Train, 41 Madison Ave., 28th Floor, New York City, NY 10010.

Charles A. Drock, 91

SEAVILLE – Charles A. Drock, 91, of Seaville, died Dec. 21, 2009 at Ocean View Center in Ocean View.

Born in Millville, he was formerly of Newfield and a resident of Seaville for 31 years. He worked as a technician for W.I.P Radio in Philadelphia, Pa. for 33 years before his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Cape May County Amateur Radio Club and the Upper Township Senior Center in Palermo.

Survivors include his wife, Violet R. Drock (nee Kelly) of Seaville; five daughters, Judith A. Dillon and Rita L. Kelly, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Eloise C. Harm of Garnet Valley, Pa., Monica M. Roth of Margate and Alice F. Jones of Lithia, Fla.; two sons, Allen R. Frazee of Holly Lake Ranch, Tex., and James G. Frazee of Carrollton, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and extended family.

A Mass of Resurrection was offered Dec. 28 from The Church of the Resurrection in Marmora. Burial was Dec. 30 in St. Dominic’s Cemetery, Holmesburg, Pa. Glenn R. Williams, 52

LAUREL, Md. – Glenn R. Williams, 52, of Laurel, Md., died Dec. 16, 2009.

He was born in Somers Point, N.J.

Survivors include siblings, Michael R., Jennifer L. Barton and Linda J. Palmer; nieces and nephews, Kevin, Masha, Scott, Ross, Rick, Christie and Jeff.

Funeral services were Dec. 27 from The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, N.J. Burial followed in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, N.J. Mary C. Fitzpatrick

SOMERS POINT – Mary Catherine Fitzpatrick, of Chicopee, Mass., died Dec. 26, 2009.

She had been a resident of Somers Point. She was the daughter of Leon and Catherine Fitzpatrick. She graduated from Holy Name High School, received her bachelor’s degree from the Elms College and her master’s in speech therapy from Westfield State College. She was employed by the Chicopee Public School System as a teacher and speech therapist for 45 years.

She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. James Fitzpatrick, and a sister, Eleanor.

Survivors include a sister, Claire of Somers Point; nieces Maura Fitzpatrick of Albuquerque, N.M. and Deirde Fitzpatrick of Sliver Spring, Md.; a nephew, Brendan of Silver Spring, Md.; grand-nieces and a grand-nephew.

Funeral services and burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. are private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, Northfield.

Frank Greck

NORTHFIELD – Frank Greck, of Northfield, died Dec. 21, 2009 after a bout with cancer.

He was born in Bound Brook, and resided in Northfield. He loved to laugh and talk, lived his life simply and happily, taking each day one at a time.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Charlotte; his son, Dave; a grandson, Dave; a brother, Vincent; and a sister, Rita.

Arrangements entrusted to the Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, Northfield.

Stella R. Whelan, 89

SOMERS POINT – Stella R. Whelan (nee Hughes), 89, of Somers Point, died Dec. 20, 2009.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was an area resident for 40 years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church. She was a homemaker, loving wife, and mother.

She was predeceased by her husband Ivan Whelan Jr.; sisters, Carol Butler and Veronica Beck; and a brother, James Hughes.

Survivors include a daughter, Stella Sable; a son, Robert Whelan Sr.; sisters, Dolores Weyler and Joan Simsick; four grandchildren, Gary Sable, Laura Sable, Kathy Sable and Robert Whelan, Jr.; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 23 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Somers Point. Burial was at Edgewood Memorial Park, Glen Mills, Pa.
