Fishing report: Keeper ratio improving

Windy weather slowed fishing for several days, but anglers who persevered caught fish. The ratio of keepers has picked up. Striped bass were caught in the surf. Kingfish are hitting bloodworms in the surf. Small blues showed in the inlets. Black drum were caught on both sides of the bay.

At Ocean City, the North Star is sailing daily at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Private charters are available on the 6-pack boat.

FinAtics reported a better ratio of keepers to throwbacks in catches of fluke. Stripers and kingfish were caught in the surf. Blues from 2 to 3 lbs. were caught in Corson’s and GE Inlets. Matt Kennedy, Havertown, Pa., weighed in a 48 lb. striper he caught on the Cape May beach.

The new fishing piers on the 9th Street causeway are drawing angler interest.

Fishin’ Stuff reported catches of weakfish and 2 to 3 lb. blues at the inlet. Fluke and stripers were also caught.

At Sea Isle City, the Starfish is sailing daily at 8 a.m. for sea bass. Saturday’s trip produced a 4.2 lb. pool winning sea bass and several other keepers for Steve Brooks. Other catches were reported for Cliff Smith (13) and Dwight Thase, Philadelphia (16). Group dates are available for 4 and 8 hr. trips. Four hour will sail Sunday, May 27 only at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Capt. Robbins sails daily at 8 a.m. for sea bass. Reservations are accepted. Weekend trips produced catches of sea bass.

The Family Fisherman pontoon boat sails for fluke at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

At Strathmere, Frank’s Boats reported some keeper fluke mixed with throwbacks and blues from 1 to 1.5 lbs. in the back bay. Fluke hit best on minnows on the dropping tide. Brian from Millville caught 18 and 19 inch fluke. Candy Jankowski, Marmora, boated 18 and 19 inch fluke.

At Somers Point, Dolfin Dock weighed in fluke for Augie Iacona, Seaville (2.58 and 2.54 lbs. on minnows); Guy Martin, Somers Point (limit of 5 fish on squid and red/white bucktail) and Al Rocks, Egg Harbor Twp. (5.4 lbs. on shrimp white Gulp). Weakfish were caught by Jim Craner, Northfield (6.54 lbs. on white bucktail and white worm) and Skip Compton, Galloway (7.81 lbs. on a yellow/white bucktail and purple worm).

The Duke of Fluke is fluke fishing daily at 8 a.m. Fluke were caught by Brett Brassler, Philadelphia, Pa. (2 lbs. 11 oz.);

Paul Chubb, Linwood (1 lb. 5 oz.) and Wayne Hartman, Hatboro, Pa. (2 lbs. 7 oz.).

At Margate, the Keeper reported pool fluke for Larry McGee, Mechanicsburg, Pa. (2.93 lbs.); Philadelphians Neill Danks (5 lbs.); Tony Chacken (3.9 and 3.83 lbs.); Rich Lietman (4.23 lbs.); Pete Demassi (3.96 lbs.); Bob Monroe (4.55 lbs.); Phil Wuznick, Marlton (3.59 lbs.) and Jim Eden, Margate (2.03 lbs.).

The Fishin’ Fun back bay boat is fluke fishing daily at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Fluke were caught by Corey Solomon, Margate (24 inch) and Craig Tragbar, Margate (18 inch).

The Jessie O is sailing daily ocean trips for sea bass.

At Atlantic City, the High Roller is catching fluke on daily trips at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Fluke took pools for Marlene Borisuck, Freeport, N.Y. (3.57 lbs.); Gary Bove, Philadelphia (2.62 lbs.); Charles Lyle, Pleasantville (2.82 lbs.); Oryest Rad, Atlantic City (2.72 lbs.); Steve Shaw, Maple Shade (3.01 lbs.) and Tiffany Kramer, Lebanon (3.1 lbs.).

At Avalon, Moran’s Dockside weighed in a 37.5 lb. striper for Gary Goll. His fish was caught at the 8th Street jetty on a white bucktail and pink zoom. Kingfish were caught on bloodworms in the surf. A few weakfish were caught on lures at night. Back bay fluke action continued with some keepers being caught.

The Miss Avalon had 40 keeper sea bass on opening day. A 6 hour trip will sail Friday at 9 a.m. Starting Saturday, the boat will sail 4 hour trips at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Hodge Podge Bait & Tackle reported lots of striper action from 8th Street jetty and the inlet, mostly on clam. Stripers were weighed in for Robert Day, Ocean View (25.56 lbs.) and Tom Schultz, Maple Glen, Pa. (24.41 lbs.). Fluke were caught in the back bay. Wanda Figeroa, Bronx, N.Y., had two 18.5 inch fluke on minnows.
