MAYS LANDING – The Ocean City Senior Tuesday Golf League is running at full membership thanks to the arrival of nine new members this season.
Over the first four weeks, the new guys have gotten a taste of competitive play, adjusted to a new course, learned the score card nuances, met new friends and have passed the challenges a league offers with flying colors.
Tony Cornell, the league’s president, welcomed Bob Wagner, Jim Dunn, Rich Frankel, Tony Cherby, Jim Hurston, John Boland, Ed Rush, Bob Gallagher and Rich Derrickson to the Tuesday League on June 5.
It only took three week for handicaps to be established before many of the new members started to get a taste of prize money and the recognition by their peers in making a difference to the dynamics of the league.
Rich Derrickson won low gross for Flight B with a 91 on June 5..Rich Frankel took home honors for low gross Flight C with an 87 on June 12. Bob Wagner came in with an impressive 63 taking the prize money for low net in A flight for week 4 and Bob Gallagher has won 66 percent of his matches to date. This is a great start!
The rest of the league is working their way into shape and along the way having some terrific match-ups with a few interesting results.
Rich Kajander scored an 84, won 4 points and surprised Jim Litts, who shot an 82 (handicap strokes have a way of doing that). Bob Heer worked 2 birdies into his round, shot a 75, and soundly defeated Dick Faunce. (Welcome back, Dick!) Rich Frankel, one of our new guys, took 4 points from Brown Murr with an 87 to 90 victory. After the match, Brown spent an extra 10 minutes reviewing the score card wondering what just happened. Larry Heckler suffered his first loss of the season to Doug Eckard, who scored an impressive 83 to 88 win. With Larry’s loss, the league’s only player with 4 weeks of play and still unbeaten is Don Foley. Don is a low-key guy who doesn’t get many headlines, but goes about his business on the course very methodically. This past week he took care of Gary Harper with an 87 to 95 win. Just as a side note, Don is a student of the game and always willing to share his knowledge of the sport with anyone eager to learn.
