STRATHMERE — Joe O’Neil, an Upper Township Beach Patrol lieutenant, estimated that of the patrol’s 35 lifeguards, 11 of them are former Junior Guards.

All of those former Junior Guards are helping train potential future rookie lifeguards this summer through the Junior Guards, an annual program that helps children from ages 11 to 16 learn lifeguarding skills.
