SMH Seaville Thrift Shop needs volunteers

Upper Township — If you enjoy working with people while helping raise money for a good cause, consider volunteering at the Auxiliary of Shore Memorial Hospital's Thrift Shop in Seaville. The Auxiliary is looking for volunteers interested in donating a few hours of their time each week at the Seaville location. World Without Asthma fundraising, accepting donations

Ocean City — The new non-profit organization World Without Asthma is raising funds and supporting research for the cure of asthma, and working on public education about the disease. The website at www.worldwithoutasthma.com is accepting donations. Sponsors and volunteers are needed. Fundraising has started with original art sales by Pat Kazanjian at Who's On First café, First and Asbury Avenue. Fifty percent of all sales go to World Without Asthma. 'Dive and Dine' at A.C. Aquarium

Atlantic City — The Atlantic City Aquarium will have its live diver feeding show at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter. "Dive and Dine" features the aquarium's diver in the 25,000 gallon "Fish of the Mid-Atlantic" tank. Audiences can watch and interact with the diver as she hand-feeds cownose rays, swims with nurse sharks, and dives with dogfish in the tank. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with the diver asking questions during the show. This underwater picnic is included with paid admission to the aquarium. The feeding show lasts approximately 20 minutes with a question and answer session afterward. While visiting the aquarium be sure to stay around for the Shark & Ray feedings at the second floor shark and ray touch tank. Feedings are daily at 12 and 3 p.m. and the exotic animal show is at 2 p.m. (Saturdays and Sundays only). Local Girl Scouts Seeks Service Unit Manager

Linwood — The Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey are seeking a volunteer Service Unit Manager to oversee troops in the inland-island region (Atlantic City, Ventnor, Longport, Northfield, Linwood and Somers Point). The Service Unit Manager would moderate bi-monthly meetings held in the evening on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at the Linwood Library. Any community-minded adult is eligible for the position. Former experience in the Girl Scout organization is a plus. Training for the Service Unit Manager position is available. Open registration for new riders at ARCH

Egg Harbor Township — The Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped is holding open registration for new riders for fall classes. The program at ARCH provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons to children and adults with disabilities. During its 20 years of service to the community, ARCH has rehabilitated 325 riders each year by working on posture, balance, mobility, speech, concentration and self esteem. CARA starting new group for men

Cape May County — Coalition Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) is announcing open spaces in its Men Exploring New Directions group (MEND). This group is designed to show men different techniques with communication, listening skills and behavioral control. Playaway: New Way to Listen to Books at the Library

Ocean City — Playaway, an audio device about the size and weight of an IPod, is the latest format to listen to books. The Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Avenue, has a collection of both fiction and non-fiction titles in this easy-to-use format. Each Playaway allows the listener to hear an unabridged book and to bookmark the place where he has stopped listening . This convenient, battery- operated device with headphones has become as popular as books on cassette or CD. CONTACT offers reassurance phone calls for seniors

CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offers a reassurance program for senior citizens or anyone who is alone or housebound or feeling isolated and lonely. Clients receive a daily telephone call at the time they specify. Trained volunteers provide a friendly hello and check to make sure there are no emergencies. The volunteers are committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly and those who are unable to leave their homes. "Teen Praise" band open to teenagers 12-19

Linwood — Central United Methodist Church's new "Teen Praise" band is open to any teen 12-19 interested in playing, singing or just participating in learning and performing contemporary Christian music. Registration Going on Now for ACCC's winter and spring terms

Mays Landing — There is still time to register for a variety of winter and spring term classes at Atlantic Cape Community College. ACCC will offer several new classes this spring, including Community Journalism, Women and Madness in Literature, Radio Broadcasting, Food Fundamentals and Love and Marriage in 19th Century British Women's Novels. Normal registration hours are weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extended hours to 7 p.m. are scheduled through Thursday, Dec. 4, and again Jan. 12-15. The college will be closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1. Winter term classes will be held Mondays-Saturdays, Jan. 2-15. The last day to register in person for this session is Dec. 23. Mail, fax and online registrations will be accepted through Jan. 1. You must have a PIN to register online. Spring semester classes begin Jan. 20. Depending on their status as new or returning students, students can register for spring classes in person through Jan. 16, or by mail, fax and the Internet through Jan. 19. Rotarians Seek Home for Exchange Student

Ocean City — The Rotary clubs of Ocean City are looking for families to host a boy from Argentina this winter for several months. Host families need to live in Ocean City or an Ocean City High School sending district Rotary Youth Exchange students are usually hosted by 1 to 3 families during their year here. Families do not need to be Rotarians. Any family is eligible as long as they will provide a warm, caring environment for the exchange student. Successful exchanges have been hosted by these categories of families: couples with children, couples with no children, couples with very young children, retired couples, “empty nesters,” and single parent families. Families will receive a complete orientation and support from the local Rotary club. The responsibilities are simple - treat the student as you would your own child. They are expected to live by the family rules and guidelines. All students come with health insurance and spending money in addition to a modest allowance from the local Rotary Club. TLC Postpartum Adjustment Support meets Mondays

Somers Point — A TLC Postpartum Adjustment Support Group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays at Shore Memorial Hospital. This free counselor-guided weekly support group helps new mothers deal with the adjustments of new parenthood and the illness of postpartum depression. Heartland Hospice welcomes all to Bereavement Group

Somers Point — Have you recently suffered a loss of a loved one? Call 2-1-1 to reduce risk of cancer

CAPE MAY COUNTY - The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Central & South Jersey Affiliate is asking New Jersey women to resolve to make a simple, life-saving phone call to 2-1-1, a telephone hotline where callers can learn more about breast cancer, find a local screening center, make an appointment to receive a mammogram, and in many cases even arrange for a free mammogram. Working in tandem with the New Jersey 2-1-1 Partnership to ensure that medically underserved women in the state gain access to the care that they need, the Komen Central & South Jersey Affiliate has launched Reach Out for Life: Somebody Needs You, an initiative pooling public and private resources to reach out to underserved communities to empower women with information about breast self-exams, provide access to mammograms, and offer support with treatment. HSOC offers 30-day pet health insurance

Ocean City — The Humane Society of Ocean City is happy to let prospective cat and dog adopters know that when they open their hearts and homes to a shelter animal, they will now receive 30 days of free health insurance for their pet, in addition to the previous offer of one free vet visit at a participating veterinarian's office. Under a new software record-keeping application called "Pet Point", the shelter is now able to offer this valuable insurance to anyone who adopts one (or more!) of the HSOC's wonderful cats or dogs. Many of these animals were abandoned, found injured or lost with no known owner, or rescued from "kill" shelters. They are anxiously waiting for a loving family to call their own. Library Seeks New Participants for Great Books Group

Cape May Court House — The Cape May County Library is looking for new participants for the Great Books Reading and Discussion Group. Great Books has been meeting at the Main Library for more than fifteen years. Discussion sessions are held every other Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon from mid-September through April at the Main Library, 30 Mechanic St. The group uses a series of books issued by the Great Books Foundation which include works of philosophy, drama, poetry and short stories. The cost of the book is $24.95. Two professors at the University of Chicago launched the Great Books Foundation in 1947. Today more than 850 Great Books groups meet across the country. Donate to Strunk Family Fire Fund

Ocean City — On Friday, Nov. 14, an Ocean City family lost its new home of less than two months to a devastating fire. All family members and the family dog escaped the fire safely, but have lost almost everything to smoke, water and fire damage. Ocean City — Life drawing model open art group, watercolor instruction class and open mic poetry group continue at the Ocean City Fine Arts League. The life drawing group meets first and third Thursday evenings each month under the tutelage of Meed Barnett. Sue Rau, watercolorist and instructor, continues class each Sunday morning for beginners and advanced students. In addition, Bud Cole leads an open mic poetry group every fourth Friday evening. Ocean City — The annual Veteran's Day ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 11 at 11a.m. at Veteran's Memorial Park, 6th and Wesley Avenue. Aquatic & Fitness Center Adult Swim Classes Sundays

The Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center is now offering coached swim workouts and a technique instructional session as part of its existing masters adult swim times on Sunday mornings. Bruckner Chase, Ocean City resident and founder of the Ocean City Swim Club, will be overseeing the workouts. Workouts are scheduled Sunday mornings from 7 to 8:15 a.m. with a technique clinic that follows from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. The clinic offers instruction on some of the basics of competitive masters swimming with varying themes by week such as stroke mechanics, technique drills, mastering intervals and the clock, starts, turns, and more. Participants should already know how to swim, should have a basic knowledge of the four competitive strokes and be able to complete eight lengths of the pool without stopping. Neck and Spine Surgery Education at SMH

'Didgeridoo Down Under' at Upper Library Aug. 5

Upper Township — Young people are invited to "Didgeridoo Down Under," a one-of-a-kind, Australian music-culture-nature-art-education-entertainment-character building program, on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Upper Township Branch Library, 2050 Route 632. The workshop includes powerful messages about education, literacy and respect for all cultures and creatures. The didgeridoo will be played between discussions on Australian geography, history, language and art. Two sessions will be held: 10 a.m. for kids up to 11 years old; 2 p.m. for kids 12-18 years old.
