OCEAN CITY – Natalie Argento, a rising sophomore at Ocean City High School, was shocked Saturday night when she was called to the front of the stage three times for winning three preliminary awards at the 2020 Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant.

She was overwhelmed when, in the final announcement of the evening, she learned she would be crowned as the new Junior Miss Ocean City.

Argento, daughter of George and Dawn Argento of Ocean City, had her hand over her mouth as she walked up to get her crown and sash from Julia Wilson, who finished her reign as Junior Miss Ocean City 2019.

Even when she took her walk down the runway at the Music Pier and a burst of confetti came shooting over her head, she still had to remove her hand from over her mouth because of her surprise.

Before learning she won the title, she won the poise and composure award. Then she won the on-stage question award and to top that off, she won the interview award, which accounts for the most points in the competition.

“I was completely shocked,” Argento said backstage after the competition ended. “I have no words.”

“I was so excited to meet all of the judges in the interview (competition). I was so happy I won the interview. It’s amazing. I’m still stunned.”

In the on-stage question portion, all 18 young women aged 12 to 15 had to answer a question posed by Wilson, not an easy thing when the entire audience is waiting for the response.

“It’s a little intimidating at first,” Argento said, “but you just have to take a deep breath and say what’s on your mind, say what you feel in your heart, and that’s what I did.”

And she did it well, speaking eloquently and at length when other candidates offered far fewer words.

Argento said she felt confident during the talent portion of the contest, when she sang. She was the 17th contestant to perform.

“I knew that so many of my friends were here supporting me,” she said. “I knew they were going to hug me afterwards if I won. I’m so happy my talent went amazing. I loved it so much.”

This was the fourth year she competed in the Junior Miss Pageant. She started when she was 12 and now is 15. She remains petite at 4’11” tall.

Argento was an outsized performer Saturday night and she can chalk part of that up to her love of the stage. She is a member of the Ocean City High School Drama Guild.

“I absolutely love performing on stage,” Argento said. “And (the guild) is such a great group of people.”

She is looking forward to Night In Venice, when she can be back in a gown next July during the annual boat parade, one of the biggest events in Ocean City.

“I’m really excited for that. Looking out onto all the lagoons and seeing everyone, and waving to everyone while looking like a princess, I’m so excited,” she said, beaming.

Although starting her second year of high school, looking forward she said she wants to attend West Chester University to study nursing and to become a pediatric nurse.

West Chester has an “amazing” nursing program, she said. When she found out the university has “its own little pageant, I fell in love with it even more.”

The first runner-up was Makenna Fleming, 12; second runner-up was Lola DeMarco, 13; third runner-up was Charlotte Erickson, 13; and fourth runner-up was Sophia Wagner, 15.
