OCEAN CITY – When Emily Aita was announced as a Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader this summer, it took her family by surprise.

Her dad, Daren, was watching the tryouts online. Just when they were making the official announcement of the new Eagles cheerleaders, his computer froze.

Her mother, Lori, and her sisters were in the audience, but they had ducked out for a few minutes beforehand. When they returned, they didn’t realize what was going on.

“Funny story, my dad was watching online because he couldn’t be at the final show, and his computer actually froze right before” the announcement. “He got to know I made the team after the fact,” Aita said.

“My mom and my sisters were there, but they had slipped out of the room right before it was announced who made the team,” she explained. When they got back into the room, they thought all of the candidates, including Emily, were being introduced so they didn’t think much of it.

“So when they announced my name, they didn’t realize at first, and I guess the person next to them was like, ‘Congratulations!’ and then they were so happy and started screaming my name and were as overwhelmed as I was.”

As for herself, “For a second I just kind of was so in shock that I didn’t realize what was going on,” she said.

“I was overwhelmed with so many different emotions. I was so excited and happy and shocked at the same time. It was one of those moments you’ll never forget and you’ll always have with you throughout your life. It was such an incredible and blessed moment.”

One other time shock was on Emily’s face was when she was crowned Junior Miss Ocean City 2011 on the Music Pier stage in Ocean City, where her family has spent summer vacations and holidays for most of her life.

“That was such a life-changing event because I got to experience at such a young (age) what it was to help out in the community and really give back,” she said. “I found another passion of mine in addition to dance, which was to be part of something so much bigger than myself, which I think also influenced me as an Eagles cheerleader.”

She loved going to all the community events, especially during the summer.

“Ocean City is so special to me,” Aita said. “Definitely all the events are so unique and special and fun and always put a smile on my face (but) I really think what makes Ocean City so special and amazing are the people that I’ve gotten to know and all the positive community spirit that surrounds the city.

“It’s called America’s Greatest Family Resort for a reason. I truly believe that.”
