Upper Township wonders what will happen when plant closes, if money stays

UPPER TOWNSHIP — While environmentalists celebrate the likely closing of the venerable B.L. England electricity-generating plant and others worry about jobs and power interruptions, the potential tax impact is foremost in the minds of many throughout Upper Township.

For years, the energy tax receipts benefit to the township was enough to cover the cost of township government, which meant property owners paid no local purpose tax. Those days are long gone, but the benefit continues, bringing about $6.1 million to the township each year.
