CAPE MAY COUNTY – Republicans and Democrats chose candidates in an uncontested June 4 primary election for the general election later this year.

According to the Cape May County Clerk’s Office, voter turnout in the primary was 8.86 percent with 5,999 ballots cast. There are 67,734 registered voters in Cape May County.

Voters in the First Legislative District are choosing candidates for Senate and Assembly. For the Senate seat, Democrats chose the incumbent Senator Bob Andrzejczak, a former assemblyman who advanced to the state Senate in January after former senator Jeff Van Drew was elected to Congress last year. Andrzejczak received 2,211 votes from county Democrats.

Republicans picked Cumberland County GOP Chairman Mike Testa to run for Senate with 3,456 votes.

Candidates for two First District Assembly seats were also chosen. Democrats favored incumbent Assemblymen Bruce Land with 2,112 votes and Matthew Milam with 2,026 votes.

Republicans stuck with the incumbents, Freeholder Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes, who received 3,323 and 3,257 votes respectively.
