Jake Davis, 20, (in white T-shirt), leads more than 900 runners Thursday morning in The Fast and the Furriest 5K Turkey Trot to benefit the Humane Society of Ocean City. The annual Thanksgiving Day run continues to increase in participation. This year there were 934 participants. Davis, a former standout runner for Ocean City High School now making his mark in college, won the race in a time of 16:53. Brittany Eberson, 31, of Marmora, at right, a former state champion runner for OCHS, was the female winner, taking eighth place overall with a time of 18:18. The top 10 finishers included a raft of former Red Raider runners, including Evan Schmeizer, who was sixth; Stephen Hoffman, now a volunteer coach, who was seventh; Gavyn Fox, ninth; and Andrew DeMaria, 10th. Other top finishers were Max Stayton, 16, of Sudbury, Mass., second; Leo Zaccaria, 19, of Wildwood, third; Dan Mink, 21, of Yardley, Pa. fourth; and Mike Roesch, 39, who was fifth. There were 525 female participants and 408 male, and a large number of them were adorned with Thanksgiving-related headgear. More than 775 runners preregistered with more signing up the morning of the event. It was cold, but clear and sunny.
