PETERSBURG — Upper Township School District Superintendent Vincent Palmieri said the 2020-21 school year likely will start Sept. 8 for students.

Labor Day is late this year, and Palmieri discussed how the county’s superintendents are working to come up with a countywide calendar.

“We’ve never brought students in before that Labor Day weekend and because of our families’ commitment to their seasonal employment, most districts in the county are learning toward Tuesday, the 8th,” he said.

Teachers will likely have to return before Sept. 8.

The school board is also seeking a candidate to fill the remainder of former school board member Debbie McLees’ term. The board accepted her resignation during the same meeting.

“She served a lot of years. She was a hard worker, and if you knew anything about Debbie, she was a hard worker,” school board President Michele Barbieri said.

McLees’ term expires Dec. 31. Interested candidates can submit a letter of intent and a resume by Friday, Feb. 14. The school board will interview candidates Monday, Feb. 24, and a new candidate will be appointed and sworn in during a meeting Monday, March 16.

Barbieri also thanked the school board for its service and said that January is School Board Recognition Month.

“If you ever thought that it was a thankless position, don’t. It is not. There are plenty of people who are thankful for what you do,” she said.

Barbieri also discussed a sixth-grade trip to Stokes State Forest that she said was a success and one of the district’s most well-attended.

“The teachers have reported back that it was a great trip,” she said.

Palmieri said he wanted to publicly thank the Upper Township Parent Teacher Organization, which made goodie bags for the teachers who went on the trip to Stokes. When the teachers returned, they received the bags, which included a frozen pizza and other items, so teachers did not have to cook the night that they returned.
