GALLOAY TOWNSHIP — Richard Spurlock, banquet and catering chef at JD’s Pub & Grille in Smithville, is a North East Region winner in the 2019 Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest from General Mills Foodservice.

The 5th annual contest called on independent family or neighborhood restaurants to submit an original recipe to put their local dishes and local flavor in the national spotlight.

As a regional winner, Spurlock, of Upper Township, wins $5,000 as well as $1,000 to share with a local charity. He chose the OneForest Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and conservation. Representatives from General Mills visited the restaurant Aug. 19 to showcase the pub and celebrate Spurlock’s award-winning recipe with a special check presentation and celebratory event.

Spurlock’s Red Hot Waffle with Buffalo Shrimp recipe is one of two North East Region winners in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest. Made with Gold Medal Complete Waffle Mix and a hefty dose of buffalo sauce, paired with Yoplait Nonfat Plain Yogurt and blue cheese sauce, the sandwich features a fiery-hot waffle wrapped around crispy battered shrimp.

Spurlock is also in the running for the grand prize, to be announced in late August. One of 10 regional winners will be named the grand prize recipe winner and receive a total of $10,000 in cash and $2,000 for charity as well as a three-day trip for two to the Food Network & Cooking Channel New York City Wine & Food Festival in October.
