Johnson’s Popcorn, maker of the caramel-coated snack that is one of Ocean City’s must-have treats, prides itself not only its delicious popcorn, but also on customer service.

Started in 1940, the business now is owned by John Stauffer, who bought the franchise in 1974 following the influence of his wife.

A schoolteacher, Stauffer wanted to own a business for the summer. After learning about his wife’s love of the caramel popcorn, he bought the company.

Since purchasing Johnson’s, caramel popcorn with peanuts, cheddar popcorn and chocolate drizzle popcorn have been added to complement the original, and most popular flavor, caramel.

“We make our popcorn the same exact way as it was made in 1940. We haven’t added any ingredients or machines. It is the original process and recipe,” said Becky Juzwiak, vice president of Johnson’s Popcorn.

The original recipe has proved successful, as thousands of shore-goers flock to the Boardwalk in order to experience the salty and sweet combination. With three Boardwalk store locations in Ocean City in addition to a gift shop, as well as a store in Wildwood, Johnson’s attributes its longstanding reputation to its customer service and satisfaction.

“A large popcorn is $11.50 and a small popcorn is $7.75, but if you bring back the empty tub for a refill, the price for a large is reduced to $9.75 and the small becomes $6.75. You can keep refilling the tub as many times as you want,” Juzwiak said.

A bottomless tub-full is a traditional Boardwalk attraction that draws customers back year after year. So head on down to the Boardwalk and see what it really means to indulge in a salty and sweet combination.

Johnson’s Popcorn operates out of four Boardwalk locations in Ocean City and Wildwood. Stores are located at 606 Boardwalk, 828 Boardwalk and 1360 Boardwalk (gift shop next door) in Ocean City, and 2701 Boardwalk in Wildwood. The 14th Street Ocean City location is open all year round, except for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Hours of operation depend on the crowds at the time.
