Ocean City is packed with recreation facilities: Playgrounds, fitness center, sports

OCEAN CITY – If you can think of a sport, chances are Ocean City has facilities available to accommodate it.

The eight-mile long island includes facilities for interests from shuffleboard, baseball, soccer, beach volleyball, indoor swimming and more.

In the summer months, the city’s recreation offerings expand with the seasonal population, so anyone can stay active and improve sports skills this summer.

Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center

Included in the city’s recreation offerings is the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center at 1735 Simpson Ave. The facility offers a 25-meter pool, indoor cycling classes, aerobics studio and exercise classes, yoga, tai chi and martial arts, racquetball, swim lessons, child care facilities and more.

Swim lessons are available for ages six months through adult. Two swim teams are also available. The Ocean City C-Cerpant swim team is a competitive team for ages 6to 18 years old. The adaptive swim team accommodates individuals with disabilities in the community.

Scuba diving lessons are given by American Diving at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Ocean City Sports and Civic Center

The Ocean City Sports and Civic Center, at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk.

In the summer, the Sports and Civic Center offers a fitness/dance class for ages 7 to 12, and a recreational tumbling class. A tumbling class for ages 3 to 6 also takes place this summer.

An Ocean City Police Department Youth Camp, for ages 10 to 14, will also be held at the Civic Center. Similar camps, including a Junior Lifeguard Camp, Junior Lifeguard Program and an Ocean City Jr. Firefighter Camp, are held at various locations.

Basketball courts

Public basketball courts are located at North Street, Sixth Street, 18th Street, 34th and 52nd streets. Summer basketball leagues for men, women and children are available at select courts.

A men’s league begins June 17 at the Ocean City Intermediate School and Sixth Street courts. The league plays Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7, 8, and 9 p.m. For women, a basketball league begins June 16 and meets at the Sixth Street courts. The league members play Monday and Wednesday at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

Leagues are available for boys, going into third through 12th grade, and for girls, for students going into third through ninth grades.

Four day-long basketball camps, for ages 5 to 14, are held this summer.

The basketball camps run from July 14 to Aug. 8 at the Ocean City Intermediate School basketball courts. To register for the Hoop Heaven Basketball Camp, see www.svgcamps.com.

Volunteer basketball coaches are needed.

Soccer/lacrosse fields

Ocean City has two soccer complexes, at Tennessee Avenue and the Emil Palmer Field on 15th Street and E. Simpson Avenue.

A soccer camp and games and an instructional soccer clinic are planned for this summer.

Sixth to eighth grade students can attend the soccer clinic and games at the Tennessee Avenue complex, from June 23 to July 30.

The weeklong soccer camps are for ages three to 13 from June 30 to Aug. 8. Players meet at the Sixth and Haven baseball complex.

The Tennessee Avenue fields also host a girls lacrosse camp July 14 to 18 for ages 8 to 14, a boys lacrosse camp, July 7 to 11 and July 28 to Aug. 1, for ages 5 to 15, and girls lacrosse pick-up games for ninth to 12th graders.

Baseball and softball fields

Baseball and softball fields are located on Fifth and Sixth streets and at 35th and Haven Avenue.

Public golf course

The Ocean City Municipal Golf Course is a par 3, 12-hole course located at 26th Street and Bay Avenue. The course is open April through October, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the off-season, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer.

Clubs, hand carts and ride carts are available for rent.

Children under age 12 are not permitted without a parent present.

A summer golf clinic is available for children this July and August.

The clinic teaches children chipping, putting and short-iron game. For ages 8 to 10, the clinic is July 7 to 10, and for ages 11 to 12, the clinic runs Aug. 4 to 7.

Playgrounds and pocket parks

Public playgrounds are located at North, Eighth, 15th, 29th, 34th and 52nd streets.

From June 23 to Aug. 15, Monday through Friday, playground activities for children take place at North, Eighth, 15th, 34th and 52nd street playgrounds.

According to Joan Timmons, who organizes the camps, the playground activities run for eight weeks. Each week is themed, Timmons said, and incudes a craft, a game and a snack. Camps also include fun activities, such as an Ocean City Fire Department demonstration.

City parks include Veteran’s Memorial Park, Fifth Street and Wesley Avenue, Waterfront Park and Marina, 2nd Street and Bay Avenue, and pocket parks at Ninth Street and West Avenue, and the 800 block of Asbury Avenue.

Boat Ramp

A public boat ramp is located at Tennessee and the bay. Access Tennessee Avenue off Bay Avenue by the public golf course.

Tennis courts

Ocean City has three public tennis courts, located at 35th Street and West Avenue, 18th Street and Haven Avenue and Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Courts are open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.

Courts can be reserved in person daily, or up to one week in advance.

Through the summer, a partner program, tennis programs and clinics for adults and a clinic and camp for children ages 8 to 16 are available. A USTA Ladies Double League practices Thursdays.

Tournaments for adults and children are also held throughout the summer.

Carey Stadium

Carey Stadium holds Ocean City High School’s football field, at Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue, it will be the site of a football camp for students in 3rd to Eighth grades. The camp runs July 7 to 11.

The stadium includes a public track which is under construction for the summer. Free Fun Runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 26, will be held at an alternate location this summer.

Shuffleboard courts

Shuffleboard courts are at Fifth th Street and the Boardwalk.

New Jersey State Tournaments and ocean City Shuffleboard tournaments run from June to September.

Corson’s Inlet State Park

Corson’s Inlet State Park is 341-acres connecting Ocean City, Strathmere and Sea Isle City. Facilities include a boat ramp, catamaran boat storage, fishing and crabbing.

Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball facilities are at Fifth Street and the beach.

Dog Park

Ocean City’s dog park is at 45th Street and Haven Avenue. It is open year round, daily, from dawn to dusk.

Beach walks

Ocean City offers guided beach walks in the north and south ends of the island in July and August. Walks are Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., at 59th Street and Central Avenue, and Wednesday at 9 a.m. and Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the north end. North end tours meet in the parking lot by the Longport Bridge.
