Crabbing a popular, easy activity at the shore
Posted: June 24, 2015

Of the wide variety of marine animals on the Atlantic Coast, none is more well-known by people, young and old, then the blue crab.  Blue crabThe crab’s abundance, beautiful coloration, pugnacious temperament and delicious flavor make it a favorite of recreational crabbers in New Jersey. Crabbing is a family sport that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age or sex and when compared to other forms of recreation, it is relatively inexpensive. In addition to its recreational value, the blue crab also supports an important commercial fishery.

Labor Day is end of summer, but not the end of fluke fishing
Posted: September 11, 2014

Well, Labor Day has past and with it the unofficial end of summer. The kids go back to school and the shoobies go home. But, let’s not forget September is a great month for fishing in south Jersey. Flounder fishing has been very good and the season does not end until Sept. 27.  So, if you have the chance, enjoy the reduced traffic and get out there and catch some fluke.

It’s a good summer for fishing
Posted: August 20, 2014

Well, after I talked about the great inshore fishing last week things have even gotten better. We had some Gulf Stream Bluewater push all the way into the beach bringing with it some beautiful water and lots of life. I talked to one fisherman who was fishing Wildwood Reef and he swore he could see the reef balls in 40 feet of water. Also, we have had lots of reports of Mahi as close as Cape May reef, as well as flying fish. One of my customers, Zack Bellapigna, had what I am calling a “Cape May inshore slam,” he had 6 flounder to 24”, 2 Sea Bass to 18” and a 44 lb. yellowfin tuna at Reef Site 11, only 18 miles from shore. So, once again if you head out front fishing be prepared for anything, you never know what the warm water is bringing to the coastal waters.

MidAtlantic fishing tournament set for August 17-22 off Cape May
Posted: August 13, 2014

Known for more than two decades as the “Main Event” for big game tournament anglers, the MidAtlantic boasts a rich tradition of great fishing, exceptional dockside hospitality and a family-friendly tournament atmosphere at host marinas located within two of the Atlantic coast’s most famous and popular summer resort towns — Cape May, N.J., and Ocean City, Md. Throw in a cash purse that has consistently topped $1.5 million and it’s easy to see why this event is circled on the big game tournament calendars of the top boats and crews along the eastern seaboard each year.

Hurricane Arthur’s winds cause upwelling, pushing fish out
Posted: July 16, 2014

Thankfully, Hurricane Arthur stayed offshore of our area this week, but it did put a damper on many activities this past week.  Arthur brought with it some heavy winds, keeping most boaters shore bound.  So after such good fishing recently, it was a slow week for reports.  We are still in a pattern of heavy wind as I write this, but things are looking up for the end of the week and the weekend. So I’m sure the fish are still waiting, we just need to get back out there.

Flounder is arguably the most popular fish in New Jersey. Most fishermen have fished for them at one time. They are also on most menus in shore town restaurants. There is good reason for this popularity: they make a delicious meal and they are a blast to catch.

Beautiful weather has allowed plenty of anglers to hit the water
Posted: July 02, 2014

Summer is now in full swing and so is summer fishing. The beautiful weather this past week, allowed lots of anglers to hit the water. The flounder fishing has been pretty good and they are being caught from the back bays, out front, and all the way to the Old Grounds, 20 miles south of Cape May. Tuna fishing has also picked up along the canyon edges. Also, the first white and blue marlin were reported in canyon waters this week.
