1889 – Survivors of that May’s Johnstown flood were staying at Atlantic City’s Children’s Seashore House and the nearby Mercer Memorial House.  Both facilities were established to provide ailing women and children an opportunity to benefit from the seashore.  Over 2,000 died in the flood leaving 124 women and 198 men widowed and 98 children orphaned.
