August 3rd 

1879 – Atlantic County prisoners were incarcerated in the Court House as the old jail was under construction and it was illegal to move prisoners out of the county.  The jail was built in 1840 by renown Philadelphia architect Thomas Ustic Walter (1804 – 1887) who was famous for his work expanding the U.S. Capitol and for completing its dome.
