June 13th

1909 – An article in the Atlantic County Record praised the work of Sheriff Enoch L. Johnson (1883 – 1968) for maintaining excellent conditions in the Atlantic County Jail.  The Record maintained that it was the best kept jail in the state and reported that Johnson successfully quartered “male and female, black and white, and juvenile prisoners” separately.  Johnson would become known as “Nucky” Johnson and would be political boss of both Atlantic City and the county until his imprisonment in 1941.
