1879 – Cape May City officials recognized the need for a full time fire department following the Great Fire of 1878.  As a result, they became the first in the county to have a “paid” fire department.  Volunteers were on call 24/7, but 50 full-time chauffeurs were hired because the horses needed constant care.  It wasn’t until the 1970s that Cape May and other Cape May County towns hired full-time, paid fire fighters.
