August 26th

1929 – A beacon atop Atlantic City’s Ritz Carlton Hotel was lit for mariners.  When the Absecon Lighthouse opened in 1857, there were no colossal boardwalk hotels obscuring its view.  By the roaring twenties, there were so many hotels towering above the lighthouse that the situation became dangerous and a hotel was selected for the warning light.  The Ritz first opened in June 1921 at Iowa Avenue and the Boardwalk and soon became a favorite for celebrities and crime figures.  It was converted to The Ritz Condominiums in 1982 and is today one of the few grand old hotels that is still standing.
