My uncle Harry was the youngest of four brothers. His oldest brother Joe was a journalist and author; next oldest was Abe, my father, an all-state fullback in high school, and a member of Temple University’s powerhouse football teams of the 1930s. He later played with the Frankfort team, forerunner to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Then there was Alex, a talented pianist and composer, who eventually wrote musical scores for such movies as “Spartacus,” “A Street Car Named Desire,” “Viva Zapata” and “Unchained,” which featured “Unchained Melody.” “Unchained Melody” was named one of the greatest love songs of the century. Alex was awarded a lifetime Oscar by the Academy.
