Remember when kidnappers cut out letters from magazines to write ransom notes? These and other things are becoming a lost art in our ever-changing culture. Clever kidnappers would buy a bunch of magazines and start cutting out letters to form words. The ransom note was an untraceable jumble of colorful letters of different fonts. We do know the magazine letter method of writing a ransom note was even mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes novel.

It seems women’s magazines are better suited for ransom notes than Time or Motor Trend because the letters tend to be larger in the headlines. Believe it or not, there is now an app for your computer called Ransom Note Generator that produces text-resembling magazine cut-out letters. Of course, if you use it for a ransom note from your printer, you’ll have identified yourself. Investigators tell us any computer printer is traceable because it leaves an invisible signature. If you recall episodes of TV’s Dragnet, typewriters were also identifiable by the wear on their letters.
