OUR VIEW: Sheriff sending the wrong message about following the law

Dispute over ICE pact should be handled another way

While we understand the reasoning behind Sheriff Robert Nolan wanting to continue his department’s relationship with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), we don’t understand how he can justify openly defying a directive from the state attorney general.

Nolan decided to continue an agreement with ICE, started under former Sheriff Gary Schaffer. It is the 287(g) program that allows members of the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department to check on the immigration status of suspects at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
