ATLANTIC CITY – The setting rays of the sun glimmered off the glossy siding of hotels and casinos, skyscrapers dotting the Atlantic City skyline in the distance. Hundreds of eager Jersey shore residents and tourists hustled down the beach for a different kind of fun. They kicked the fine grains of sand out of their way as they made their way to the water’s edge, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pending athletic spectacle. A man spoke through a megaphone at the top of the Albany Avenue beach, but his voice was drowned out by the crashing waves of the ocean and the cascading voices of the crowd.

Some 30 minutes later, the hundreds in attendance at the Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic condensed at one central location, as the second of four races started. Competitors abandoned the 15 equidistant lanes set up for the rowing events, launching into a half-mile swim bunched together.
