EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The golf gods handed us some miserable conditions for the Ocean City Senior Golf League opening day on May 14, but they made up for it last week. We were presented with glorious, sunny weather. Our attendance improved nicely compared with week one. When the entirety of our southern contingent finally makes its way back to South Jersey, we’ll really be rolling.

An important tradition in our league’s long history takes the form of monetary awards we give at the end of every school year to seniors on Ocean City High School’s golf team. Bill Wright, our “Director of Scholarships and Directory,” did another amazing job lining up sponsors for the league’s annual directory, the publication of which he also oversees. Contributions to the Directory from local merchants and other generous patrons make their way to the young high school golfers. Bill represents us at the awards gala each spring, and Rich Hawthorne also met with the team a few weeks ago. This may well be the best thing that we do as an organization. It enables us to participate in that grand tradition of giving that has helped to define what golf in America is all about in the game’s modern era.
